23.4. - 05.05 Huaraz - Huanuco - Huancayo

 As we left Huaraz we took the unpaved road through the Nationalpark Huarascan.

Our first Campspot over 4000m.  

The famous Puya Raimondi was named in this way in homage to the Italian person who discovered it. This plant is a gigantic inflorescence that is unique all over the world. It reaches up to 10 m height, with more than three thousand flowers and six million seeds in each plant. Its biological cycle is approximately 40 years.

Biking on over 4000m is really tough, but the scenery is amazingly beautiful.  

 Unfortunately we had rain and in the nigth it snowed. The second time on this trip our tent an bikes were covered with snow and ice. This picture is the view from our tent when we camped on 4770m!

Peruvians love to honk. They do it all the time.

In May the Peruvians start to celebrate a christian festivity ! In some villages they have fiestas for eight days and in other parts they celebrate the whole month.We met Florencio in San Pedro de Cajas, he is a tourist guide at the local archeological site. He took us to the festivities and we danced in circle and drank calientito (herbal tea with rum and pisco) in circles! A lot of people wanted to dance with the Gringos... great fun! 

Here we met Florencio. This are salt wells with 98% of salt. There is also a legend of two young people in love and their parents did not like it, sounds like Romeo and Julia.

 The morning after and the perfect birhtday present... a 40km downhill to the town Tarma.

 After the long downhill we had to go back nearly the same altitude in 25km. 

Lukily it was not always that steep : )

Election campaign for the elections in December. 

 We are a little bit too early in the Andes. So the chances for bad weather are still high.

But we are prepared for the worst : )

Fahrrad fahren auf über 4000m ist eine große Herausforderung. Die Luft ist so dünn und selbst die kleinste Anstrengung wird sehr groß. Kurz vor dem Pass müssen wir beinahe alle 500m eine Verschnaufpause einlegen. Doch nach einigen Minuten geht es ziemlich gut wieder weiter. 

Wir zelten auf 4700m mit dem Blick auf schneebedeckte Bergriesen! Toll! Nicht so toll, es regnet und später wird der Regen sogar zu Schnee... es ist eisig kalt! 

Das krasseste an der Sache, selbst hier in dieser Höhe und in dieser kargen Einöde leben Menschen. Sie leben in runden Steinhäusern, so groß wie ein Zelt, ohne Heizung und ohne wärmenden Daunenschlafsack! Für uns nur schwer vorstellbar. Außer an frischer Luft, unglaublich schöner Landschaft und Wasser mangelt es hier doch an Allem.

Von 4883m unserem Höhenrekord geht es erstmals nur noch Bergab. In Huanuco sind wir dann nur noch auf 1900m. Die Stadt ist chaotisch ohne Ende. Überall wird gehupt, gedrängelt, gegessen, gelebt! Aus unserem Hotelzimmer können wir das Chaos überblicken und sind auch akkustisch immer dabei! 

Von Huanuco aus geht es wieder auf 4300m und dann kommt das Hochplateau von Junin. Wir treffen zwei Radfahrer aus Deutschland (siehe Leute 2015) die uns einen guten Tip geben. Wir biegen nach San Pedro de Cajas ab, umfahrern so die schmutzigste Stadt Perus La Oroya (Minenstadt) und landen einen Volltreffer mit Florencio als unser Touristenführer für eine typische Peruanische Feier! Wir tanzen im Kreis mit den Einheimischen und trinken Calientito (caliento = heiß) im Kreis! Irgendwo haben wir gelesen, Alkohol in der Höhe ist nicht so gut! Wir sind noch immer auf 4100m. Das wird wohl der Grund für die Kopfschmerzen gewesen sein ;)

Jetzt sind wir in Huancayo, weiter gehts über Ayacucho, Abancay nach Cusco - ca.870km ... Peru ist riesig!
