La Paz - The worlds highest city (3650m) with the seat of a Government. Sucre is the official Capial of Bolivia.
Before coming in to La Paz you have to cross El Alto, suburb of La Paz in 4100m.
With different lines of cable cars you can explore those two cities easily.

View on modern La Paz and the big summit of Illimani mountain the highest peak of the Cordillera Real.
The Casa the Ciclista with its current inhabitants from Austria, Colombia, France, Germany, Switzerland and the United States. We stayed one week and had lots of fun meeting new people and meeting again John we have met in Colombia and Ecuador.
Good conversations, good food, good bike specific discussions, good cheap wine...
And then we left inspired and full of motivation to a trip to the South Yungas.
Commander Bus - Maybe next time we will take the bus leaving La Paz and then I definitely want the Commander!
We climbed the beautiful pass La Cumbre 4679m and short after Unduavi we changed the good paved road into bumpy bad gravel!

And then we are in the warm and green region called Sud Yungas.
The second day on the loop was dusty and steep.
The dust changed with a little water to soapy mud but the steep climbs stayed the same until the last day of the 9 days loop.
We met Christian (second from right) the first time nearly 4 months ago in Banos, Ecuador.
What a coincidend meeting him with Marc in the Yungas.
Both travelling by Motorbike, they just came from the Atacama desert in Chile and will end their trip in a couple of days in La Paz!
The loop is 400km long with nearly 10 000m to climb. Every single meter you descend you have to climb again...
The Yungas are one of the main Coca growing region in Bolivia.
Totally different than in Colombia the Coca cultivation is obvious and not hidden.
The locals seem to chew coca leaves the whole day. One cheek is full with leaves as big as a tennis ball! Looks really funny!

We talked to a local farmer and learned a lot about the local wildlife and that the meat of an ant-eater tastes like ants! He also told us that with a motorbike you need 27 minutes to climb the 10 km and 1000 hm.
We needed 1 hour and 55 minutes!

In La Paz verbringen wir eine Woche im Casa de Ciclista mit vielen weiteren Radreisenden. Wir treffen wieder auf John, der auf seinen Pass wartet, doch da die USA Opfer einer Cyberatacke wurde ging für ihn alles länger als erwartet. Doch mittlerweile ist er wieder auf dem Rad und radelt nach Osten Brasilien zu. Shirine und Kevin (USA) http://awanderingphoto.com/ erzählen uns von der Süd Yungas Runde und wir machen uns auf über den schönen La Cumbre Pass in den Dschungel! Naja, wirklich Dschungel ist es nicht, aber sehr warm, feucht und grün. Die Süd Yungas sind Hauptanbaugebiet für Koka und wir fahren an unzähligen terassenförmig anglegten Feldern vorbei. Hier wird im Gegensatz zu Kolumbien der Kokaanbau offen gehandelt und unterstützt. Wir sehen viele Leute mit großen Massen Kokablättern in einer Backenseite, sieht sehr komisch aus!
Wir kommen ganz schön an unsere Grenzen auf der staubigen, matschigen und unglaublich steilen Strecke! Aber es ist schön wieder etwas grün und schön gelegene Dörfer zu sehen. Wir fahren auch an einigen Afrobolivianischen Ortschaften vorbei. Bolivien war und ist reich an Bodenschätzen, was die spanischen Eroberer dazu veranlasst hat Sklaven aus Afrika (meist Angola) zu holen damit diese sich gemeinsam mit den Ureinwohnern in den Minen zu Tode schuften...
Noch in Peru werden wir gewarnt, wir sollen aufpassen und wenn wir ein Messer haben, dies bereit halten. Das Messer brauchen wir auch, aber nur um die Orangen zu schälen, die uns die netten Menschen schenken!
Nach 10 Tagen sind wir nun in Oruro und ruhen uns aus bevor es weiter zu den großen Salzseen geht!

Wie die Zeit doch vergeht....
Hier im Markgräflerland ist nun der Sommer da....wir haben über 35Grad und auf das Wochenende soll es 40 Grad geben.
Wünsche Euch eine gute Weiterreise und für mich als Mama wünsche mir mir das die nächsten 6 Monate schnell vorbei gehen.
